Alcohol Prevention
Dear Parents and Students,
Underage drinking and drug use are serious problems in our community. The Northern Kentucky Youth Foundation is sponsoring the SafeHome Pledge to encourage families to discuss underage drinking and drug use and making healthy choices.
SafeHome Principles
• Parents will allow student parties or gatherings at their homes only when the parents are present and willing to supervise.
• Parents will not serve alcohol to underage youths or allow youths to consume alcohol or use illegal drugs on their property.
• Students will not provide alcohol to others or allow underage drinking or drug use in their homes. Please join our SafeHome Directory by talking with your family, taking the pledge and returning a signed copy to the Northern Kentucky Youth Foundation.
Please help keep kids safe by supporting SafeHome. Even if you have taken the pledge in previous years, please talk with your family and sign the pledge form again.
Did You Know?
• Alcohol use is the number one drug problem among young people. Children are trying alcohol at younger ages than ever before. Boys often try alcohol for the first time at age 11. The average age for an American girl’s first drink is 13.
• Children who start drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to be alcohol-dependent as adults than individuals who defer drinking until age 21. 25%of individuals who start drinking at age 17 will become alcohol-dependent adults.
• The younger an individual is when he/she starts drinking, the more likely he/she is to use other drugs.
• 40% of tenth graders have tried marijuana. In a large national study, half of high school seniors surveyed reported being drunk at least once within the past year. 10%had used an illegal drug other than marijuana in the past month.
• A study of ninth-grade students showed that the best predictor of risky sexual behavior was alcohol and/or drug use.
• In a survey of nearly 200,000 students, 33%said their parents often do not set clear rules.
• Studies have shown that the most consistent non-drinking teens have a sound relationship with their parents and don’t want to disappoint them.
• Family commitment to this pledge will help to keep teens drug and alcohol free.
